Fear of Flying

We would like to inform you that our practice does not prescribe diazepam, temazepam, or similar sedative medications for anxiety related to flying or to help with sleep during flights.

This is a clinical and safety-based decision, supported by national guidelines and the risks associated with these medications:

  • Not recommended by guidelines: These drugs are not licensed for flight anxiety and are contraindicated for phobias. NICE and BNF guidance advises against their use for short-term or mild anxiety.
  • Health and safety concerns: They can impair alertness, reaction time, and breathing, increase the risk of blood clots (DVT), and may cause agitation or disinhibition during the flight — posing a risk to both you and others.

  • Legal and travel issues: Diazepam is a controlled drug and is illegal in some countries, which may result in confiscation, fines, or legal action. It may also affect insurance cover or drug testing at work.
  • Not effective long term: Evidence shows benzodiazepines may worsen anxiety over time and interfere with natural coping mechanisms.

Instead, we recommend evidence-based fear of flying courses offered by several airlines and professional organisations, which are safer and more effective long-term solutions:

Thank you for your understanding.
